Things Sp@mX needs defined in its configuration:
-The e-mail address that you registered Sp@mX with, and machine string assigned by us.
-Folder created by you on your hard drive to store your spam e-mail.
-The e-mail client software (Outlook, Apple Mail, etc.) that you will be using.
-Your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server information.
-Your incoming (POP) e-mail server information.
-Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) domain name(s) i.e. comcast.net.

Common mistakes by users:
-Running the program from the download archive.
-Especially for Windows, not checking to see if the file attributes of the configuration file(s) are read/write.
-Not using the Select button to choose the processing folder.
-Incorrectly entering the registered email address and machine string.

Steps to install:
-Unzip the downloaded file to the folder of your choice.
-  (Macintosh users, please unzip the archive by dragging and dropping the archive to an open StuffIt window.)
-  Copy the contents to a folder where you have read/write/execute file permissions, preferably one that you created especially for Sp@mX.
-This will install Sp@mX on your machine.
-Your e-mail address and machine string have been registered as described in your registration e-mail. Please use these values when configuring Sp@mX, they are used for copy protection validation.

Steps to configure:
-Open your operating system's disk drive explorer (i.e. Finder, Windows Explorer) window.
-Create a folder to store your e-mail messages.
-Next, you have to configure Sp@mX with a few pieces of information.
-1) Start Sp@mX
-2) Run the configuration utility for Sp@mX by clicking 'Configure', 'Sp@mX'. Enter the data requested.  If you have a question about an item, click the question mark to the right of the item for further explanation.
-3) Click 'Save'.
-4) (Optional) Carbon copy (CC) your abuse complaints to others by clicking 'Configure', 'CC List'.  Add the CC entries to the list.  For example, if you want to CC the FDIC on phishing notices, then type alert@fdic.gov into the edit box above the 'Add' button, and click 'Add'.  When you've added all of your CC entries, click 'Done'.
-5) (Optional) Edit the abuse message that goes out at the top of your abuse complaint by clicking 'Configure', 'Abuse Message'.  When you're done editing the message, click 'Save'.
-6) (Optional) Run the configuration for 'Do not send' by clicking 'Configure', 'Do not send'.  Add your Internet Service Provider(s) (ISP) to the list. For example, if your ISP is comcast.net, then type comcast.net into the edit box above the 'Add' button, and click 'Add'. When you've added all of your ISPs, click 'Done'.
-7) (Optional) Configure friendly relays used to deliver your e-mail by clicking 'Configure', 'Relays'.  If you don't know what this is, then you probably don't need to do it.  Add your relays to the list, when you are finished, click 'Done'.

Please note: If you are using Sp@mX to report spam from multiple POP email accounts, then you must add the Mail Exchange information for each of the accounts to the Sp@mX Relay list.

If you do not do this, Sp@mX will report all of you abuse complaints to your ISP. Some
ISPs appreciate this, some do not, and in either case, reporting to your ISP will do NOTHING to reduce the level of spam that you are receiving.

For example, if you are using Sp@mX on the
POP accounts :
me@comcast.net
me@myisp.com

: lookup the Mail Exchange information using the command :
nslookup -type=MX comcast.net
: returning :
comcast.net mail exchanger = 5 gateway-s.comcast.net.
comcast.net mail exchanger = 5 gateway-r.comcast.net.
: seeing the Mail Exchange name gateway-s.comcast.net in
the answer, enter the domain portion of the answer into
your Sp@mX relay list (Configure, Relay - comcast.net). Lookup the Mail Exchange for the next account :
nslookup -type=MX myisp.com
: returning (example) :
myisp.com mail exchanger = 5 mail.realdomain.com.
: seeing the Mail Exchange name mail.realdomain.com in
the answer, enter the domain portion of the answer into your Sp@mX relay list (Configure, Relay - realdomain.com).

Just in case you are using an RFC ignorant ISP, it also wouldn't hurt to add the domain :
myisp.com
: to your Relay list.

You've now configured Sp@mX.

Steps to use:

From Sp@mX Filtering (Version 4.x and higher) -
Start Sp@mX.  Click 'Filter', 'Email'.  The filtering window will pop up, and list all of the e-mail in your POP e-mail inbox.  Using the data in the hsc database, it will then classify the e-mail as
good e-mail, spam, a bounce message, or an abuse response.  You can then make manual adjustments to the list as needed.  Click 'Go', and Sp@mX will automatically download and report your spam, and remove the bounce messages, and abuse responses from your POP inbox.  The only thing left in your POP Inbox will be e-mail that you want to receive using your regular e-mail client.  You can also 'whitelist' an e-mail item by selecting the item, and clicking the 'email' button.  This will remove the data associated with this e-mail from the hsc database.

Windows - Outlook, or Outlook Express -
With the Windows Explorer window open, and Outlook open, select a spam e-mail(s) in Outlook, and drag and drop it/them to your spam folder in Windows Explorer. Sp@mX works seamlessly with these message formats.
Outlook (not Outlook Express) users must install the Outlook Message Parser.

Macintosh ENTOURAGE - Create a storage folder using Finder in your user public area.
Configure Sp@mX to use this folder, and 'Process as plain text'.
From Entourage, drag and drop a few e-mails to your storage folder.
Start Sp@mX, you should see the messages you've dragged and dropped listed.
Click 'All'. Let Sp@mX do it's thing.

Macintosh EUDORA - If you're going to be processing e-mail one at a time (you don't get that much spam), then choose 'Process as plain text' as your e-mail client. Drag and drop an e-mail from Eudora to your spam storage folder, start Sp@mX, it should be the only one listed, click 'All', and Sp@mX will process this message.

If you're going to be processing multiple messages at one time (you get a lot of spam), then select 'Eudora (Mac)' as your Sp@mX e-mail client, and you should be able to select multiple messages in Eudora, and drag and drop them to folder you created to store your e-mail. This will create one big file that contains all of the messages. Sp@mX will automatically parse the big file into little files, and process all of them.

Macintosh APPLE MAIL - If you're going to be processing e-mail one at a time (you don't get that much spam), then choose 'Process as plain text' as your e-mail client. Save an e-mail from Apple Mail to your spam storage folder, save as RAW MESSAGE SOURCE, start Sp@mX, it should be the only one listed, click 'All', and Sp@mX will process this message.

If you're going to be processing multiple messages at one time (you get a lot of spam), then select 'Apple Mail' as your Sp@mX e-mail client. You should be able to select multiple messages in Apple Mail, save as RAW MESSAGE SOURCE to the folder you created to store your messages. This will create one big file that contains all of the messages. This is the only file that you should see listed when Sp@mX starts. Sp@mX will automatically parse the big file into little files, and process all of them.

Mozilla Thunderbird - From the Sp@mX Configuration menu, select 'Thunderbird (Windows)' as your e-mail client.  Also, from the Sp@mX Configuration menu, select Thunderbird, and enter the location of your Thunderbird spam archive and save.  This archive name will correspond to the name of the folder that you created using Thunderbird to store your spam.  Sp@mX will automatically parse the items in this archive into little files, and process them all.  Please note, you must manage the contents of this archive yourself using Thunderbird, so delete your spam from this folder from Thunderbird after processing.  For addition Thunderbird information, please visit the Thunderbird configuration help page.

Typical Sp@mX Use:
Start Sp@mX. You should see the message(s) listed in the 'Email Messages' list. You should be validated, and all of the buttons on the user interface should be active.

-Click the button 'All'. Sp@mX should process the e-mail messages listed, they should disappear, and your spam reported counter should increment.
-Or click the button 'Selected'. Sp@mX will process the ONE message selected, and it will disappear, and your spam reported counter should increment.
