I've posted Purify version 2.1.6 on the web site at 8:10am Eastern Time.

- Fixed bug that would allow some messages marked as IGNORE to be forwarded to iPhone (thanks for pointing this out Lance).
- Fixed formatting of Purify Abuse Complaint so the user's custom abuse message would show up at top of emailed abuse report.

Beautiful, Jeff smile.gif I posted about that second one months ago, but no one else seemed to be experiencing the problem so I gave up on it. Glad you've fixed both.

After 4 and a half hours of setup I think I have most of this program correctly configured and operating. Not everything followed the manual as that was not how my screens appeared, but I did manage to "guess" my way through this complicated process. What I can not figure out is the reporting configuration. I have tried every combination I can think of and checked and unchecked the login and SSL boxes. Nothing seems to work.

My server is road runner. I have tried to use "Road Runner" as the server name, I have tried smtp-server@new.rr.com which is the outgoing mail. I have used the original port "110" and port "2020" I have use my original sign on name and my e-mail name.

nothing happens but a continuous train track. meaning no connection.

any ideas?
Jeff Hendrickson
Welcome! smile.gif

SMTP is on port 25. For SMTP on SSL the default is 465, or 587 depending on your ISP's configuration.

FYI, it looks like new.rr.com's Mail Exchanger is hrndva-smtpin01.mail.rr.com, and I was just able to connect to it on port 25.
phfreund
I have never used SSL so I see no reason to at this point.

used port 25 and both configurations and still no connection. I can't wait to try this program out for real.
phfreund
I have contacted the national help desk with Roadrunner and the confirmed that my configuration of smtp-server.new.rr.com is correct. The port to use is 25 as you said.

I have my user name and password correct and my e-mail address. I am not checking the SSL box.

I have tried checking and unchecking the login box.

The only thing left on that config page was the reporting key.

What it took, for whatever reason, was to deleted the reporting key and then enter all the other information first. I then reentered the reporting key after everything was set up.

It is working for now. Why I could not change the settings while the reporting key was filled in and have them work I have no idea.

Are there specific instructions for using the new version with a .mac account? I can't seem to implement the filtering or port number changing.
Jeff Hendrickson
Welcome! smile.gif

Set up your .mac account without using the Apple Mail "helper." Just set it up as a new IMAP account.
Then you can set the ports to whatever you like.

Hi Jeff !
You promised me to correct the display error in the subject column. But this one is still there! :-(((

Hope you will find some time to do it. :-)))

Hallo Thomas! I don't know if you saw my email about this, but for my software (or any software for that matter) to correctly display a foreign character set, the character set needs to be included as part of the string, or identified in the context where the string will be displayed.

e.g.
=?iso-8859-1?Q?Test with Umlauts =E4=FC=F6asdf2?=

This string would be correctly displayed by my software in the subject line.

The email client of the sender of the email that you provided as an example does not do this. I would have to do a lot of work to handle this, and it would be a better approach to just come out with a German version of Purify. But, then people would say "we love your program, but your German sucks!" smile.gif

Who knows, I may surprise you and do this ...

Hi Jeff !

That explains a lot! I already saw many emails subjects displaying "?iso-8859-1?Q?Test with Umlauts =E4=FC=F6asdf2?". And of course I can live with out have the displaying error beeing corrected. smile.gif
I'm sure there much bigger and more imported things to work on!

Looking forward to your game!

By the way ... how was the Rommel movie?

Loved it! And thank you. I had to stop/rewind it occasionally because I go "lost" listening to the German. Langsamer bitte! Thoroughly enjoyed watching it! smile.gif

Is any one else having difficulty with this program freezing after every single action it takes????? It will rate the e-mail for a specific number, then wait for another 15-30 minutes and rate another batch. It would take me all day to read my e-mail if I were solely dependent upon this program. Fortunately, I can access my e-mail via another method also.

When going into the preferences and either reporting or just deleting a rated e-mail, I can only do one action at a time. I then need to force quit out of the program and restart and keep repeating until all mail is taken care of. While I work on other things during this process, as it does not freeze any of the other "spaces", it generally takes me 3-4 hours to deal with a couple of dozen e-mails.

Is this normal???? or is there a bug someplace?????
Jeff Hendrickson
Purify lives (and dies) by a fast Internet connection, and fast DNS.

If you have fast Internet, and fast DNS, Purify will be fast.

You can search this message board on DNS, and you'll see the link to update your DNS settings if needed.
You can also run Purify with logging on to tell where the bottleneck is ..., it produces a log telling you exactly how long it took to complete each rating, or reporting step.

not that I understand completely what you are talking about, but it has nothing to do with the speed of this computer or my roadrunner account (server).

The problem is only with the program itself. it is slow, slow, slow..... it is the only program on this computer which drags. Even when I have it isolated in a single "space" with my mail reader it does not respond to the forefront even after several minutes. When a program freezes, it freezes. Thankfully, it is not freezing the rest of my computer. It only tends to freeze the "space" it is assigned to.

Yeah, I think that you may have misunderstood what I said, because it has everything to do with the speed of your roadrunner account, and the DNS services that roadrunner is providing for you.

When Purify is rating an email, or reporting email abuse, it uses the network resources that you have available to make queries (specifically DNS queries) to find out the source of an email (in your case this would be roadrunner if they are your provider). The speed with which your network provides these answers determines the speed at which Purify operates. If these answers come back very fast, Purify will run very fast, if these answers come back very slowly, then Purify will run very slowly.

I would suggest (again) that you run Purify with logging on, take a look at the log file (log.txt) and Purify will tell you exactly how long it is taking to get each answer to the tracing questions that it asks. It will also tell you about any other issues that it doesn't like, if applicable.

Then you can look at the OpenDNS solution that I used to resolve the slowness that I experienced using the Comcast DNS servers here.

I run Purify here on one of my Linux servers using the OpenDNS server for DNS and Purify runs like a rocket for me.
phfreund
by looking at the both the txt log and by running a ping and also a traceroute on the address I do see a slowing down which is minimal since I only had one e-mail come in and be rated at the time. normal was 13.131 ms and it dropped to 140.375 ms. I am sure that if I were to turn on Purify with 2 dozen e-mails in the cache it would lock up or at least slow down.

Most of this is way way way over my head. I can determine what the address is that airport is accessing, but I have no idea how I would change that.

Yeah, this reads like you may need some external assistance. A trip to the Apple Genius bar would probably help you, or find a local kid computer whiz. Using OpenDNS for my DNS made such a dramatic difference in not only the way that Purify runs, but the way everything Internet related runs, that I posted a message on this board advocating its use. DNS does the translation between a human readable name (mybigdomain.com) and a number (IP address), and vice versa. You use this service EVERY time that you type a domain name into Safari, Firefox, etc..., and navigate to a web site, send an email, etc... Comcast, Cox, etc..., have notoriously slow DNS (they are in business to provide you with the least that they can, and charge the most that they can for it...).

The question that you want to ask the technical resource that you enlist to help you is "how do I change the DNS servers on my computer to use the OpenDNS servers?" They will be able to either show you how to do this, or do it for you.

Another thing that I would do is make sure that you have enough memory in your Mac. I think that 1MB is a minimum (my opinion). The more the better.

Having enough memory, and using the OpenDNS servers will make everything that you do on your Mac faster.
phfreund
Memory is 1GB. I do have a couple of former students I introduced to apple computers back in the early 90's. They graduated and continued on to become techs at the local apple dealership. I can't understand them now either.

I tend to be very good at popping things into a micro wave these days, but not so good at following recipes to bake in an oven. I probably would starve if it were not for one button touch.

thanks!!
