As most of you know, I'm just about to release the cross platform version of SpamX.

In the Windows version, SpamX tried to identify one IP address as the source of the spam.

I have questions about this now.

I have had several spam emails that I have looked up by hand, and seen that a lot of them were combinations of an IP address that belonged to the spammer, and an IP address that belonged to an ISP that had an open relay that the spammer exploited.

Here is my question. Don't you think that an abuse complaint should go out to both parties??? ph34r.gif

I know that Spamcop certainly advise open relay hostmasters as well as the originating ISP so I don't see why SpamX shouldn't wink.gif Can you check for open relays with ORBS? cool.gif

As an aside, I keep getting spam where no source is identified, does SpamX just skip them or are they left in the processing folder for manual attention?

Hi Chris,

Yeah, sometimes this happens, mostly because of that #$%^& Winsock control. I don't know if I told you before, but approximately 25 percent of the code in SpamX does nothing but babysit that thing...

The beta of Cross Platform SpamX is done, so the Winsock control is out! Hopefully this will resolve this problem...

I would be nice if the reports to open realy owners was different to the one that goes to the ISP.

Mail server admins will be much more likely to take action if they get a message like:

Hi,
Your mailserver has been used to send unsolicited bulk email. we appreciate that this is not your fault personally but here are a few links to sites that may be able to help.

Then include a few links to places like Spamcop and so on that have info on securing things like Exchange, Sendmail, Domino and NetWare.

That's a great suggestion. I think you might have also been the person that suggested adding a feature to customize the abuse message.

These have been added to the Cross Platform version of SpamX, which is out in beta as version 2.1.0. ph34r.gif
