Full Version: Can't open new mail

Have been over all the settings dozens of times. I'm getting pop-up messages from Outlook like "Failed to update headers," "connection to server timed out, disconnecting". And I can't open any new mail at all. When I try, after several seconds it says "task couldn't be completed because the connection was busy on other tasks".

If I revert to my regular IMAP server for incoming mail, all is well.

Purify 1.1.0.
Tifferg
I'd suggest increasing your POP3 timeout setting in Outlook Accounts configuration. Logically, it will take longer as Purify is filtering your mail on the fly, so won't be quite as fast as an unsieved mail stream. Hopefully that should work cool.gif

Well...

a) It's an IMAP account not POP, and

cool.gif The timeout is already set to 90 seconds. That oughta be plenty--the server is on the same LAN and it is very lightly loaded (it's OS X Server).

Replying to my own message here...

It occurred to me that maybe when it's first installed on an IMAP account, Purify might have to go through all the old mail that's still on the server and that could take quite a while? Could that be the cause?
Jeff Hendrickson
It's not impossible that you have some quirk to your IMAP implementation that Purify doesn't like. sad.gif

You can test this theory by turning logging on, and taking a look at the log file after an email download attempt. Purify will complain to the log if it sees something that it doesn't like.

So where do I find the log to look at it?

I've been away from this for a few days. Trying again, I'm getting Outlook apparently stalling with the Send/Receive Status stuck at 22% (or some other value on different attempts). Outlook remains responsive, I just can't read any mail. I just got a message that Outlook had a timeout while communicating with localhost.
Jeff Hendrickson
Hey Rob. Try turning logging on. Preferences, Debug Log On.

Try to download some email using your IMAP account. Then send me the file log.txt from your Purify program folder. I can make short work of correcting this once I know what's going on. smile.gif

I sent you the log files you asked for several days ago. Did you get them?
Jeff Hendrickson
Yes, thanks. I'm in the thick of thin things right now..., get to this ASAP.

Hmm. I wonder if this is also a cause of my frequently getting failures of Eudora to retrieve mail. Anyone know the Eudora X setting for POP3 timeouts?

RobLewis
Thought I would try the new version 1.2.1 to see if it was any better. But dang if it didn't ask me for a password when I was trying to unzip the download. I have no idea what to do about that. Is this a new feature?
Jeff Hendrickson
I just downloaded the Windows version (from the message board link) from my Windows computer, unzipped it, ran it, no problem, no password.

Grasping at straws here...

I was trying to unzip the folder into D:\DProgram Files. I use this directory for some installs because my C: drive is starting to fill up.

Any chance this could prompt the password request? Interestingly, it started to unzip the files, apparently did a few, then stopped and said the file Purify.exe needed a password.

I'll try it again.

Hi folks, I've been getting a rather similar timeout situation with Purify where it repeatedly hangs at certain messages and causes a timeout. I've emailed the log to Jeff. My email client is Thunderbird, under Mac OSX Tiger, so it could well be a Purify issue rather than a mail client one.

Cheers, Mike.

OK, this time the same downloaded file unzipped without asking for a password. Go figure. Maybe because this time the previous version of Purify wasn't running?

Sadly, version 1.2.(1/0) doesn't seem to have improved my problem; if anything it may be worse. The first time I launched Outlook, it first asked me for my localhost mail password (never did that before) and then apparently froze with "Send/Receive status" (at the bottom of the mail window) stuck at 33%. On subsequent launches and reboots, it repeatedly asks for the password, and I have to click Cancel 3 times to make it stop. The Send/Receive status is still frozen at 33%. If I try to quit Outlook, it says the program is not responding and wants me to send Microsoft an error report.

OK, my bad. My initial trial of the latest Purify was doomed due to temporary problems with the mail server. I'll report again when I have time and I know the server is working right.
RobLewis
No joy.

I verified the IMAP server (the built-in Cyrus in OS X Server 10.4.11) was working, and rechecked all the settings again.

Outlook shows all 480 new message headers (all spam) in the InBox list, but over on the right pane where the actual message should be shown, is just a solid blue pane with a message "This item cannot be displayed in the Reading Pane. Open the item to read its contents."

When I double-click the header in the list to try to open it, after a few seconds' delay I get a pop-up "Can't open this item. The operation could not be completed because the connection is busy performing other tasks. Please try again later."

I'm no expert, but it appears that Purify is fetching the message headers OK, but for some reason is unable to fetch the message contents from the IMAP server.

When I click "Send/Receive" in Outlook, an "Outlook Send/Receive Progress" window opens. It lists 3 tasks. The first one, "Sending", completes quickly. The second one, "Checking for new mail in subscribed folders", sometimes succeeds. The third one, "Folder: InBox Check for new mail" never completes, and never shows any progress on the progress bar. Eventually it times out.

The beginning of the latest log is below.

In this situation advise try-download pst viewer, when i was in similar situation,me advised this tool,it is free, and program will help you to restore your data from files with *.pst and *.ost extension, tool will work under all supported versions of Microsoft Windows operating system, as well as with Microsoft Outlook, can retrieve all contents as a number of files in *.vcf, *.txt and *.eml formats, will extract thousands of different files, that will be placed into any folder, upon your choice, converting of recovered data into a *.pst file, that can be opened by any mail client or viewer .pst file, compatible with Microsoft Outlook, file size will not exceed 1Gb.
Alex Krenvalk
Once my friend said:"Why do have any programs for recover corrupted mails?",and after that I understood he was right, and finded in google, next application for him-view .ost, but frankly speaking tool helped me too))),program has free status as far as I know, because I didn't use it some months or possible near year, also it "allows to recover *.ost files, when Microsoft Exchange Server gets out of order and your data may be lost, open damaged files, you can open your corrupted *.ost file and estimate data losses, can convert *.ost files to *.pst files, that can be easily opened by any email client, compatible with Microsoft Outlook, convert your *.ost to *.pst, but to extract a list of files in such formats, as: *.eml. *.vcf and *.txt, allows to view a ost file and avoid extracting, for example, 50 Mb of your content, you can extract all files from .ost viewer mail, than just to copy and paste emails and contacts, that you need, view ost file runs under all versions of Windows operating system, such as: Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows 2003, Windows XP and Windows Vista.

Some time ago I had big problems with passwords for Outlook.I lost their. But I fortunately heard about-password cracker ldap, and tool solved all my problems in seconds and executed it for free and showed how recover password-protected files with *.pst extension for Microsoft Outlook email client.
