I know there has to be an option somewhere as I dont get this on my home pc. My work one adds [Smith,Colm] every time I star typing in the middle of someones e-mail. I know that this has it's uses but I think I could live without it.

I presume you mean that your real name appears in the "From:" box when forwarding or replying to a message.
The particulars will be different depending on what e-mail client you are using (Internet Explorer, Mozilla, etc.) but in general, this behavior is specified in the e-mail program's mail setup routine. For example, I use Microsoft Outlook 2002 (XP). This is a common program in an office situation. Let's use this as an example. In any other program, the steps will be very similar, though the name and order of specific steps may vary.
In Outlook 2002 (XP) go to Tools|E-mail Accounts. On the next dialgue under "E-mail", select "View or change existing e-mail accounts". In the resulting dialogue, highlight (select) the name of the account you wish to change. If you have more than one Outlook data file, be sure you have selected the correct one in the drop-down box below. Then click "Change" (CTRL + C) and put whatever you wish into the "Name:" box. I haven't tried it lately, but I don't think most mail programs will let you leave it blank. Still, you're under no obligation to use your real name unless your boss insists on it. In that case your IT/IS manager may have set a rule to prevent you from making changes, regardless what program you use to send/receive mail. If you still want to change it, you'll have to speak to the person responsible.
Good luck and shoot back if this doesn't anwer your question.

Hi Codger,
I've read through your reply but I think we're not on the same wavelength. I'll give you and example. If I recieve an e-mail like the one here -
-----------------------
Hi Colm,
Can you check these contracts and reply with comments?
006-0001072-023
006-0001259-000
Tony
------------------------------------------
when I reply and ammend the text like so -
-------------------------------------------
Hi Colm,
Can you check these contracts and reply with comments?
006-0001072-023[Smith,Colm] confirmed
006-0001259-000[Smith,Colm] not confirmed
Tony
-----------------------------------------------
The [Smith,Colm] bit is automatically added as soon as I type the first letter of "confirmed".
I am told that Outlook has this feature so that a user can trace the person who made amendments or added comments to an e-mail.
I want to turn this function off.
I hope that's a bit clearer.

Hi Colm,
you are right, that is a feature of Outlook, go to Tools Options. On the Preferences tab you should have a Junk Email button and beside it: Email options button
Click that Email options and you should see the options for including original message as attachment or indented text. There is also a box: "prefix line with" and (ghosted on my prefs) a "Mark my comments with" check box.
I'm fairly certain that's the feature you refer to which is causing you problems
Clearing that check box will take the inline editing highlight (your name) off.
I hope
RegardsChris

Thanks very much Chris. That works just fine. Is this a relatively new board?

There ya go! All it takes is a little patience to sort it out. Way to go, Chris.

It's relatively new, been around since October of last year. Jeff started it basically so that people using SpamXii could report on their experiences with a view to improving the product.
He's done remarkably well in that department. He could tell you more.
