Full Version: Em@ilCRX major headaches

I've had nothing but trouble with Em@ilCRX since I tried to configure it. There are so many problems, I hardly know where to begin. Here goes:
  • The Accounts window shows only three of my six e-mail accounts as "Enabled". The other three revert to "Not Registered" status after I save the settings then reopen the Accounts dialogue.
  • Em@ilCRX uses 95-100% of CPU for long periods when running.
  • Multiple roor messages pop up causing the program to hang completely for varying amounts of time.
  • Closing the first popup error message, "Whut the -", appears to allow the program to continue its work cycle until:
  • After a batch of messages has been received from the first account the message bar (main program window) gets stuck for a very long time with the message "Stopping the Rating Engine".
  • Then another popup "Whut the -" followed by a "StackOverflowException" message. If I click <OK> to that message, Em@ilCRX is terminated. If I just move it out of the way, Em@ilCRX continues to run - in circles. It obsessively re-downloads all the same messages I saw before in the program status bar. The only way to stop it is to close the StackOverflowException message, terminating the program.
  • If I open the message list I see that Em@ilCRX stopped downloading from my first e-mail account (#1 in the accounts list) after message # 170 even though a check of my mail account using my ISP's online mail viewer shows there are more in my first inbox.
  • The other two "Enabled" accounts then proceed to download. They have far fewer messages. But:
  • The messages apparently received from the other two accounts are actually more messages from account #1. I know this because the sender and subject lines shown in the upper part of the window have the senders and titles of messages from other accounts. But a look in the lower part of the window shows the headers and content of messages in Account #1.
Help! I'm going nuts, and have wasted way to much time on this. Thanks.

Codger,

You have got the very latest version, haven't you: it's been in pretty rapid development over recent weeks and some of the behaviour you describe is consistent with older versions?

Which version are you using?

Have you registered all six accounts with hsc?

Let us know...
Jeff Hendrickson
Thanks for this Codger.

Virtually all of the issues that you raise have been addressed in the version currently on the web site.

If it would be a PITA to start with a clean install, and you want to continue using that database that you started with, then you can download the latest binary, and then you can run Database, Apply Updates, and then go to Accounts, and make sure that you've entered an email address for each account.

The accounts showing not registered probably means that the Login doesn't match what is in the database. If you can send me the Login (no password) for the accounts in question, then I'll get them registered.

Yes, I downloaded the updated files Monday morning.

No, what I have is unusable anyway. I'll re-post after I try everything mentioned here.

I doubt it, Jeff, I copied and pasted everything, even checking for leading or trailing spaces, but I'll check again.

All of this happened with the updated files, though I honestly can't remember if I deleted the database when I updated.
Thanks for your replies, I'll let you know how it goes. sad.gif

Well, there are fewer error messages, but nothing else has improved. I deleted all my previous files: database, countries, log and executable and redownloaded Em@ilCRX. I set it all up again, double-checking to make sure I had everything entered correctly. I sent Jeff the logins that showed as "Not Registered" and he tells me that he not only re-registered the three accounts but made other changes but the three accounts are still "Not Registered". In addition, the program continues to re-download the same messages over and over, even after I've deleted them from the database (though not the server, I've done it this way for many years to allow for Web access and as a backup.) while it fails to download other mesages.

I figured out the login problem.

The - and _ chars where being converted in the web request.

I've updated them in the database, and all of your accounts should validate now.

If you don't delete your email afer downloading, CRX might "appear" to be downloading this again, but, this is CRX checking the messages on your POP server, and seeing if they're in the CRX database .

There should not be any way to have multiple emails (with the same UIDL) appear as two separate messages. If you want to leave the email on your server, this is a necessary evil.

If you have "delete messages" checked in CRX, then these messages should be deleted after you download them to CRX.

Jeff, the login problem appears to be fixed, though I haven't closed and reopened Em@ilCRX yet.

I just spent two hours writing a description of what's going on and lost it when Em@ilCRX finally finished downloading all the mesages from all six accounts. It then threw up another series of StackOverflowExceptions. Those error messages won't come into focus when I click on the program window, I have to minimize the window that's covering the popup in order to deal with it. I must have closed the browser when I meant to minimize it. Poof! two hours' worth of analysis, writing and editing gone. I won't try to duplicate that now. I guess I'll deal with it in the morning.

I will send you a screenshot which should give you some idea of what I'm dealing with, though that's really only a part of it.

Sounds very frustrating. I don't get it Codger.

Something else is going on here that I'm not aware of. I've tested this program (hard) on my Macintosh, Windows, and Linux computers. It works wonderfully.

I might suggest that you try deleting all of your CRX email addresses but one, and let's focus on getting that working, or figuring out why it's not working for you.

OK that's worth a try. I may also try disabling my TrendMicro POP3 filter (part of their Internet Security 2006 suite). I noticed it using quite a few CPU cycles (45-50%) while Em@ilCRX was processing mail. The behavior is to be expected, but I wonder if there might be some incompatibility.

Anyway, it'll all have to wait, I have to meet somebody right now.

P.S. (very important) All six e-mail accounts are now properly registered. Thanks, Jeff.
Codger
OK, here goes again.

I shut off my TrendMicro Spam filter then opened Em@ilCRX and immediately disabled all but my #1 Account. Afterward, here's what I saw.
  • Status showed "Rating" while flashing rapidly through what appeared to be every message already in my Database including everything from my "Disabled accounts". CPU usage showed 96-99% during this entire process.
    • As this proceeded one message (from Account #5, i.e. "Disabled") threw up an error message: "exception, LookupCountry()". The message subject stayed in the Status bar until I dismissed the error message.
    • Shortly (maybe immediately) after that, Status showed "Stopping Rating Engine"
    • After a brief delay, another popup message: "Whut the -". I was unable to dismiss it until CPU usage returned to normal (0% with brief flases of single-digit usage %).
    • When I did dismiss it I immediately got error message: "StackOverflowException ... must terminate application".
    • Leaving this popup open allows Em@ilCRX to continue processing.
  • Status now shows "Received..." followed by the message subjects flashing rapidly through the list of messages in my #1 Account.
    • CPU usage mostly at 0%.
  • Occasionally a message title will stay a while in the Status bar.
    • Sometimes it will say: "Unable to locate UIDL for (message subject)". Sometimes it just shows the subject.
    • Sometimes it will continue processing, sometimes the Status will change to "SMTP Sender Done".
    • If the latter happens then "Whut the -" pops up, CPU usage goes to 90-100% for 30, 40, 60 seconds and I am unable to close the popup until usage returns to normal.
    • When it returns to normal, I close the popup.
    • Then the StackOverflowException message pops up again.
  • Then Em@ilCRX begins receiving messages from the beginning. After each repeat a few more messages are received until I close the most recent StackOverflowException popup, which terminates the program.
  • When I reopen the program and look at messages I can see more weirdness, but I'm sure this is more than enough to process for now.
I've seen that some others have had problems too, but I haven't seen anyone else describe this kind of weirdness. Please, I can't spend any more time on this: H-e-l-l-p!

Codger, can you please delete all but one Account, and see if we can get that running.

I've noticed that other people running multiple accounts are having some trouble. If you going back to only one, and this gets your configuration up and running, then I'll have something to sink my teeth into....

Thanks!

Jeff, I "Disabled" all but one account as I described in my last post. Do you literally mean "delete" all their information?
