When i download and extract the latest os x version, I only get a plain documen not an executable application.

Any ideas?

Try launching a Stuffit and opening/expanding the file which you have downloaded by hand, manually.

This should extract the executable, which can be dragged into your Applications folder and launched. Good luck!
