I tried downloading Sp@mX 4.2.2 from VersionTracker AND the Sp@m X Web site but get an application file that has a generic icon and that will not open. I tried unstuffing it but that's not the problem. Also fixed permissions.

This has happened before on my Mac, now running OS 10.4.1

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

BILL

One quick question Bill. How are you expanding the file?
If you're using Stuffit make sure that you are using 9.0.2
This may be tricky, since 9.0.2 has a version number of 9.0.1, and the only way to make sure you have 9.0.2 is if you got a message saying that Stuffit was updated successfully (or something similar).
What's the size of the file? It should be around 2 MB. I've had issues with some downloads from VersionTracker. Another alternative you may want to try is Macupdate.
If you're still having problems, please post and I'm sure more people will offer solutions smile.gif

Two suggestions:

1. As Eddie says, make sure you have the latest version of StuffIt Expander (9.0.2). control-click on the generic icon, select "Open With" from the contextual menu, then "StuffIt Expander (9.0.1)" from the sub-menu. You should get a new file "Sp@mXMacintosh.1", the ".1" being added by the Finder because there is already a file "Sp@mXMacintosh". It should have the correct icon. Trash the original file, delete ".1" from the new file's name, and you're there.

2. Use an FTP client instead of a web browser. I use Interarchy. On the message board page with the links to the new version, I copy the Mac OS X version link, go to Interarchy > File > FTP > FTP Download..., paste the link, click the "Download" button, and Interarchy downloads the file to my desktop and the file expands correctly. I don't know why a FTP download works and an HTTP download doesn't, as StuffIt Expander is involve either way, but I'm just happy to get the result.

mad.gif Help!!!!! 4.2.2 is looking somewhere in a Thunderbird folder or file and reprocessing email that it has already processed. I've checked and it seem to be a file named spam with no extension. It appears that Sp@mx is getting confused between the folder "spam" and the file "spam". The file "spam" seem to be an archive or something.

Is anybody else having this problem? sad.gif

You need to manage your Thunderbird spam folder by yourself.

After reporting, delete the items in the Thunderbird folder that you are using for reporting. smile.gif
