Hi,
When I download the 4.2.1 Mac OS X version it is unzipped by Stuffit and a spmxmacintosh folder is created. But opening the folder shows a generic document icon for the application itself. If I double-click on he Sp@mXMacintosh application stuffit is launced again and produces Sp@mXMacintosh.1 with the correct icon but double-clicking on it launches "Script Editor"
Issuing the "file" command on the generic-icon Sp@mXMacintosh in Terminal returns the following:
Sp@mXMacintosh: MacBinary III data with surprising version number
What am I doing wrong?

I have never been successful in downloading the Mac OS X version using a web browser. It just appears on my desktop as a generic document.
It was explained that StuffIt Expander probably had incorrect setting, but I couldn't find anything wrong with my StuffIt Expander settings, nor with StuffIt Deluxe (version 8 at first, then recently version 9).
Eventually I worked out that if I pasted the URL -- <http://www.hendricom.com/downloads/spamxmacintoshbinonly.zip> or <http://www.hendricom.com/downloads/spamxmacintosh.zip> -- into my FTP client's "FTP Download" dialog, it would work. Now I always use that method.

Hi Bruce,
Depending on your version of OS X, Stuffit may or may not work.
Their most recent version is 9.0.2 and seems to work fine with Tiger 10.4.1. By the way, that version will show as 9.0.1, even after successfully running the 9.02 update, which in some cases can be tricky. You will know you have 9.0.2 if you get the message “Installation was successful”
I you have Stuffit Deluxe 9.0.1 and can't update it, you'll have to install Stuffit Standard 9.0.1 first, then delete it, and then run the 9.0.2 Deluxe updater again (if I remember correctly).
Regarding the browsers, it is strange how different the variety of browsers behave. I've never had a problem downloading Sp@mX using OMNIweb, which is my main browser. I do wish they would update it for Speed Download compatibility and other bug fixes, though. I use other browsers from time to time when I have ran into web problems/incompatibilities. I even used Internet Explorer recently!

Same for me. Used to have issues but now Safari or however the archive is being uploaded is working OK for me.

Safari has these same problem for me - try internet explorer or netscape for your downloading.

I think the problem lies in how it is posted on the web. Selecting get info reveals that the three letter suffixes are not used on any of the file formats below the zipped file.
Download the file from the site and run it through Stuffit, then change the name of the resulting file by one letter or so and run that file through Stuffit. The result will be the Sp@mXMacintosh application without the .app suffix.
It will work fine without the suffix however stuffit has a problem distinguishing between the compressed file and the application file without the appropiate suffixes. Thats why it named the final file as Sp@mXMacintosh.1, the Sp@mXMacintosh file name was already taken by the compressed file. So the finder just tagged a 1 on the end. You could also just delete the .1 from the final file and it work also.
